Poland Names John McLaren as National Team Manager

Program Builds Toward 2029 World Baseball Classic

April 2026 | Polish Baseball Federation

The Polish Baseball Federation is entering a pivotal new chapter, highlighted by the appointment of former Major League Baseball manager John McLaren as the new manager of the Polish National Team — a major step as Poland builds momentum toward qualification for the 2029 World Baseball Classic.

Former MLB All-Star and FOX Sports broadcaster A.J. Pierzynski believes Poland's progress comes at the perfect time for the global game.

"This year's World Baseball Classic was such a huge success and that event works best when more countries are competitive — when more fans around the world feel like they have a team to root for. Poland is moving toward that stage. And with the momentum they're building — improved rankings, international tournaments, experienced leadership — there's a real opportunity ahead. The goal? Get Poland into the 2029 World Baseball Classic. That would be a massive moment not just for Polish baseball, but for the continued globalization of the sport."

McLaren Brings Major League Experience

John McLaren - Polish National Team Manager

John McLaren

National Team Manager

McLaren brings decades of Major League Baseball experience, including time as manager of the Seattle Mariners and coaching roles across multiple MLB organizations. His leadership introduces professional standards, strategic expertise, and player development insight that can accelerate Poland's rise.

Alongside the appointment of McLaren, the Polish Baseball Federation has also named Paul Bragiel as General Manager — a move that further strengthens the program's leadership structure and signals Poland's continued commitment to international growth.

Bragiel, a global entrepreneur and sports investor with a strong track record of building international partnerships, will oversee the strategic direction of the national program, including player recruitment, development initiatives, and global outreach. His appointment reflects Poland Baseball's commitment to expanding its international footprint while strengthening connections with the Polish diaspora.

"These appointments represent a major milestone for baseball in Poland. With John's on-field leadership and Paul's vision off the field, we are building a foundation to compete at the highest levels of international baseball."
— John Dobkowski, President of the Polish Baseball & Softball Federation

A Program on the Rise

Poland's national team has quietly become one of Europe's fastest-growing baseball programs. In 2025, Poland was the 5th-largest climber in the WBSC World Baseball Rankings, reflecting steady investment in coaching, player development, and international competition.

These gains represent years of foundational work and a long-term commitment to building a sustainable national program capable of competing with Europe's established baseball nations.

2026 European Championships in Wrocław

Momentum continues to build as Poland prepares to host the 2026 European Baseball Championships in Wrocław. Hosting a major international tournament — and doing so in consecutive cycles — reflects growing confidence in Poland's ability to showcase the sport.

The event presents a major opportunity to introduce baseball to a new generation of Polish fans, strengthen Poland's international competitiveness, continue climbing the global rankings, and grow the sport domestically.

Building Through the Global Polish Community

Another key component of Poland's strategy is engaging players with Polish heritage around the world. Millions of people with Polish roots live outside Poland, particularly in the United States, and many have strong baseball backgrounds.

Poland is actively welcoming players with Polish eligibility to help strengthen the national team and contribute to the program's long-term development.
